1900-1940 archive of KHS magazines, the December 1918 edition lists the houses and battalion the men were in.
SCHOOL HISTORY TO NOTE
Only boys were at the school at this time, all were from very poor backgrounds.
The school Houses in 1911 were: Bradford, Clyde, Durham, Greenwich, Norwich, Severn, Sheffield and Swansea.
Note - the building that is now Plymouth house was then Norwich and the building that is now Norwich was then Clyde
Severn House was for the over 21's and Greenwich was the sanitorium (medical centre).
Plymouth house then was for the over 14s continuing their training in the workshops and was in a large building in what is known as staff village.
Havelock was the farm in Canada owned by the school where some boys went after leaving KHS. The first five men went in 1895.
Latimer was a house in London owned by the school where some boys went after leaving KHS. The address was 1-2 Fitzroy Square and 341 Euston Road, St Pancras, NW and it was opened on the 10th March 1894 with 11 young men, although it had capacity for 70. Some of the boys worked for 2 companies owned by the founder, a metal works called 'Baker and Lyons' and a Piano Factory at Newton Works run by Mr Tucker.
Durham House opened on 14th Sept 1886 with 12 boys, followed by Clyde 18th July 1888, Sheffield House 6th Sept 1890, Swansea House 10th Nov 1892 and Bradford House 3rd July 1897. Plymouth House was opened 13th January 1893. Severn in 1907 and Greenwich in 1908.
